We wanted to tell you about this sooner, but with a few things to tie down, we have left it until now. Here is the list (as we know it) of the activities that we have planned for this year’s Centenary Celebrations. Many of them are open to all, some are just for a particular section, but we hope that there are many things that you can attend, and help us to make this year a special year.
So lets start with February, Eastleigh District will be celebrating Baden-Powell’s 150th birthday (invites have been sent – RSVP by 1st February), The Spitfires Scout and Guide Band will be going on a short tour of the German Carnivals with the Eastleigh Carnival Court and Angela Holidays, and the Scouts get the chance to all be Jamie Oliver for a day with their Cooking Competition.
March starts with a bang at the County Winter Camp and continues with the now annual running of the DC’s Challenge for the Scout Section (details will be sent to your troop, if you have not heard anything already).
The big event of April is the St. Georges Day Parade, when all invested members of the Scout Association are invited to renew their promise. With this year being so unique, the renewal is sure to have a special meaning for everyone who can attend.
May sees the weather getting warmer (hopefully!) and more chance to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. The Scouts will be going away to their District Camp, and will be combining this with the Mustard Trophy (a competitive navigation exercise)
Half way through the year, and Eastleigh District is looking to mark it’s history with a really special event. We have managed to secure a large part of the Eastleigh Museum in order to put on a display showing Scouting through the last 100 years. This will be open to all, and runs from 2nd to 23rd June. Eastleigh District will also be having it’s major celebratory event with the whole District being invited to camp together for the weekend – contact your Leaders for more information on this event.
July sees the whole Scout Movement start to build up for the World Jamboree, and Eastleigh District are no different, we have half a dozen young people who will be going to the Jamboree, as well as numerous leaders who will be working to ensure everyone has a good time. For those not able to go to the World Jamboree, Hampshire will be running it’s own event – H007 - which promises to be just as much fun. Opportunities are there for people to visit both major events – see their websites for details. There will also be a huge display of Hampshire Scouting with a Festival of Flags being held.
August is Party Month around the World. 1st August is the day to celebrate the last 100 years and to look forward to the next 100 years. Scouting’s Sunrise will be the chance for every Scout from every Country in the world to renew there promise, and welcome the start of a new Century. It is planned the Eastleigh District will be meeting on Eastleigh Recreation Ground to renew their promise for everyone to see. More details will be published as we get nearer the event.
October sees the second Scout Ball. After successfully hosting the event for it’s first time last year, Eastleigh District have been asked to run the event again. Looks out for flyers later in the year, and make sure to get your tickets early, it is bound to sell out quickly!
November sees two events that are quite contrasting. The Rememberance Parade is a chance for Scouts to remember those people (many of whom were about the same age as the Scouts) who have given their lives in armed combat. The month is seen out with UK Scouts taking over the Millenium Dome in London for a Scouting Showcase – open to all, and a chance to see, hear and be part of a huge make sure the next 100 years of Scouting gets underway with a bang!
