A Christmas “Thank You”

It’s that time of year when we all think “Where did that year go?” and our thoughts turn to a well deserved 2 week break from Scouting and spending what time we have with friends and family.

2011 has been another inspiring and action packed year with many of the sections having fun and adventure, completing tasks for their badge work – this was shown at the two Chief Scout Award presentation evenings held during the year.

A 1st for Eastleigh District was “St George and the Dragon” held at Eastleigh Lakeside on the May Day bank holiday. Due to St George’s day falling over the Easter holidays it was decided to hold a activity day instead with “St George” as the theme. Those that attended, all said they had a great time and I hope to repeat a similar event in 2012

2011 saw a growth in Youth membership numbers by 21 ½ % in 3 years, this could only be achieved by the dedication of you as leaders and helpers giving so much time to Scouting. We have now launched a search for a Development Manager in Eastleigh District plus other supporting roles to ensure we continue to grow and give the support, you as leaders, need.

We don’t seem to have been on many sections having an adventure abroad this year? Whilst visiting New Zealand in February, I was lucky enough to meet up with NZ Scouts where I spent a wonderful evening with a local Scout Group in Auckland with the traditional swapping of badges and kneckerchiefs etc. What inspired me most was the way “Youth” were the main focus of helping victims of a earthquake in Christchurch NZ. 2 days before my visit – NZ Scouts were at the forefront with their help, supplying tents and cooking equipment to those affected.

2011 has seen much improved communication with the “other helpers” of our Scout Groups – the Group Execs/ Trustees, I hope that the training that we have taken part in with these very necessary people will ensure they feel as much part of the District and Scouting as our leaders?

At this time of year we must think of others less fortunate than ourselves and I am proud that we raised the money in 2010 for Shelterbox and it is heart warming to know that whilst we are secure in our homes, a family in has been given hope and shelter after a disaster left them homeless this Christmas from your efforts.

Lastly on behalf of myself and the District Chairman, Jim Vaughan, Thank you for all your support & effort to Scouting in 2011and can we wish a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your families

David McGregor

District Commissioner
