Eastleigh help Kenyan Scouts return home

Following the violence earlier this year after the national elections, Kenyan Scouts fled to neighbouring Uganda after 6 members of their Scout Troop were killed. Fortunately the Scouts and many others (over 6oo refugees), from the area fled to a village where help was at hand by Ugandan Scouts that have a link with Hampshire County Scouts – this was one of 4 refugee camps in the region.

Although the situation has now settled, the Kenyan Scouts or refugees, were not able to afford their journey home.

At this years St Georges Day Service and the Chief Scout Award presentation held in April, Eastleigh District Scouts raised £310 – enough to cover the transport costs for their journey home. This was a tremendous effort by everyone in Eastleigh District!

Early this month, Eastleigh District Commissioner, David McGregor, has received a email from Ugandan Scouts informing him that the Kenyan Scouts had arrived home safely and are re-starting their lives back in their towns with equipment and tentage donated by the Ugandan Scouts

One bit of sad news is that 26 children have been orphaned and will now be looked after at the local orphanage.

A plea from the Ugandan Scouts for new equipment and donations has now been sent to Eastleigh District and Hampshire County Scouts. This is a challenge that David McGregor DC, is sure Eastleigh Scouts will want to help with!

Remember, helping with this challenge will go a long way towards you and your group achieving the International Friendship award
