5 Explorers from across Eastleigh district leapt aboard a train and headed for Brockenhurst to go Geocaching this weekend. Geocaching is a type of treasure hunt where you track down the treasure (a Cache) using a GPS. This was the first day trip out with the District GPS set (kindly donated by Garmin earlier this year).
The first Geocache was a loop around Brockenhurst, this was a multi step hunt taking us from the middle of Brockenhurst past the Village Fire Bell, Second Primary school and up to the Commonwealth War greaves in the old village church. From here we headed off into the New Forest and found a stream to sit by for lunch before trying another multi step Geocache in the forest itself. The photo shows some to the group having just unearthed the Cache beneath a root in the middle of the forest. En route home we still had time to work through the history of Eastleigh to uncover a cache hidden close to the Railway station. The weather really did help but the main conclusion was that Geocaching is a great way of getting out into the countryside with a purpose. Local people have set up a lot of the multiple step caches and this means you uncover loads of back lanes and interesting places that wouldn’t be found otherwise.
