Beavers make Masterpieces from Junk

On Saturday 10th October 2009, seven colonies from six of Eastleigh’s groups met at the 1st Eastleigh HQ to participate in the first District Junk Model Competition. Three Beavers had previously been chosen by each colony to attend the competition.

As the Beavers arrived, they all added to an already huge pile of ‘junk’, collected over the few weeks leading up to the competition, added with a huge supply of materials from the Southampton Scrapstore.

The Beavers had to work together as a team and create a model with the theme ‘Robots’, with a time limit of one hour. The Beavers all went diving in to grab everything they needed for their model, and then with the help of a leader started to build all their ideas together.

After the first half an hour, when the Robots were really starting to take shape, the Beavers had a short break for a drink, biscuit and a bounce (on the 1st Eastleigh’s Bouncy Castle), but were all eager to get back and finish their models.

The second half of the build seemed to go much quicker than the first, as the pressure was on to get finished in time. With beavers running around looking for final additions and some wrapping everything they could in foil, they were also busy thinking of a name for their Robots!

We had a special judge come along on behalf of the Southampton Scrapstore to pick our top three Robots, and after seeing the Beavers hard at work and the finished results she had the hard decision of picking a winner.

First to be announced was 3rd place – 1st Eastleigh with their entry “Ben the Beaver”

1st

Then the announcement of 2nd place – 8th Eastleigh (Friday Colony) with their entry “Sarah” – named after one of the Beavers’ mums!

And finally, the winners were the 14th Eastleigh with “Robbie-Wheeler-Robot” with the special powers of a jet-pack and a parachute.

It was a thoroughly enjoyed afternoon by all, and it will be soon be time to ask everybody to start collecting junk for next year’s competition.
