Nearly 50 young people from across the Eastleigh area have been presented with top Scouting awards at a ceremony held at the Wells Place Centre on Saturday evening.

These members of the Scout Association, have achieved the Chief Scouts Award, the highest training award in their sections, and to reward their efforts, Eastleigh District decided to make it a special evening inviting the recipients and their families to experience the night.

Top of the list are three Network Scouts who have achieved the ultimate Award for young people in Scouting, the Queen’s Scout Award. Two of the recipients, James Lewis and Christian Burkert, completed the Expedition part of the award by trekking to Mount Everest in 2007. They formed part of the support team for the Hampshire Scout Expedition that succeeded in climbing the mountain during the Scouting Centenary Year. Whilst not travelling as far, but with still the same amount of effort required, the third recipient, Charlotte Jones, completed a gruelling 4-day sailing trip from the Azores to Tenerife aboard a 72ft Racing Yacht.

All the award holders have had to complete activities in a number of different challenges that focus on the holders Fitness, Creativity and Friendship on a Community and Global level. The Scouts, Explorers and Scout Network face an extra challenge of an Expedition to test all their skills in unfamiliar environment.

All the recipients are aged between 8 and 21 years old, with the three newly awarded Queen’s Scouts now taking on leadership roles to share their knowledge and expertise to the new members starting the same amazing journey.

The evening also saw Eastleigh Scouts presenting a cheque for ￡2052 to the Scouts Holiday Homes Trust, the District’s chosen charity for 2009. The money was raised by the the young people in the District doing a range of activities throughout Eastleigh Scouting Centenary Year.

As we all know, the role of being a GSL is much more difficult than most people see, but it is a position I value greatly to ensure that Scout Groups flourish and therefore allowing Scouting in Eastleigh District to grow in a positive way whilst supporting both the leader team and also the Exec committee.

I am pleased to announce, with immediate effect, that Dick Whittington has agreed to become GSL at the 1st Eastleigh whilst also remaining at the 4th. He will be helped by Steve Harrison taking on the new role of Asst GSL, similarly at both Groups.

The change of roles means that the 2 Scout Groups in central Eastleigh will be run by one Scouting “Management Team” allowing flexibility and better use of resources for ensuring that our youth members have the best opportunities to partake in a wider range of activities and the promotion of Scouting together. It is not Dick Whittington, or the “District’s” intention to amalgamate the 2 Groups and they will continue to function seperately. The change will also allow Steve Harrison to continue his Woodbadge training and gain valuable experience in heading up a Scout Group.

I am sure you will join me in supporting Dick and Steve in a new venture for Scouting in Eastleigh and wish them good luck in their new positions

Yours in Scouting
